Translated the name, 'Iwanami' means ‘rock amidst the breaking waves’. In Japanese tradition Iwanami represents harmony and balance (in a similar way to Chinese Yin Yang) . It is this ethos that symbolises the core ideals of the Dojo (club).

Iwanami Dojo was formed in 2001 (after the Dojo leader moved from London (Hoyukai Dojo 1977-1987) to Wales (Isshin Dojo 1987-1999) and then to York. For more information join us on Facebook) and now has approximately 25 students (correct as of 29th April 2012).

The philosophy of the Dojo is: Be the best you can be, not be the best.

Iwanami Dojo welcomes members of any other Dojo or organisation to train with us. However please telephone to confirm training schedule before travelling.
