Equipment

New students to the dojo are actively discouraged from buying any equipment; initially everything you need will be supplied by the dojo.

The beginner should wear loose fitting clothing and bare feet.

Thereafter the main requirements (in order) are

1. A shinai (bamboo sword)
2. A bokken (wooden sword)
3. Hakima (divided skirt)
4. Keikogi (jacket)
5. Iai obi (belt)

Finally, after approximately 6 months to one year, a suit of armour will be required.

All equipment may be purchased through the dojo, directly from the British Kendo Renmei.

Equipment is obtained from Japan and is of the highest quality. Be aware of internet companies selling Japanese equipment made in China!

We strongly believe it is the attitude that makes the kendoka (student practicing kendo), not the equipment.
