York Kendo and Iai Club

Welcome to the Iwanami Dojo website.

Translated, the name Iwanami means ‘rock amidst the breaking waves’ and in Japanese tradition represents harmony and balance. It is this ethos that symbolises the core philosophy of the dojo (club).

We practise traditional forms of Kendo and Iai and are affiliated to the British Kendo Renmei. Despite being very traditional, we believe a relaxed and enjoyable approach is beneficial to every student’s development.

When practiced correctly both Kendo and Iai are very safe and extremely good for both the body and mind.

The philosophy of the dojo is: be the best you can be, not be the best.

Iwanami dojo welcomes members of any other dojo or organisation to train with us. However please telephone to confirm training schedule before travelling.
